A Conversation About Caregiving - A Recap of Our June Panel Event

A Conversation About Caregiving - A Recap of Our June Panel Event

On June 26, the Nebraska Lifespan Respite Network (NLRN) hosted a powerful virtual panel event, A Conversation About Caregiving, inspired by the new PBS documentary Caregiving - a film that brings to light the challenges and resilience of caregivers across the country.

More than 100 participants joined us via Zoom to listen, learn, and reflect on the personal experiences of caregivers in Nebraska. Our panelists shared deeply moving stories about what it means to care for a loved one - whether a child with complex medical needs, a parent with dementia, or a partner recovering from trauma.

Key Themes and Takeaways:

  • Caregiving is universal – Though the details vary, many participants found common ground in the emotional, physical, and financial toll caregiving can take.
  • Support is essential – From paid respite services to peer support and advocacy, panelists emphasized the importance of having a reliable support system.
  • Caregivers are resourceful and resilient – Despite the challenges, each story highlighted creativity, strength, and a deep commitment to the well-being of their loved ones.
  • There’s more work to do – Whether through policy, funding, or public awareness, the conversation underscored a need for greater recognition and support for family caregivers.
