Honoring Nebraska’s Family Caregivers: A Proclamation to Remember

Honoring Nebraska’s Family Caregivers: A Proclamation to Remember

On the morning of November 5, 2024, a meaningful step forward was taken for caregivers across our state. In a heartfelt ceremony at the Nebraska State Capitol, Governor Jim Pillen officially proclaimed November as Family Caregivers’ Month in Nebraska.

Held in the historic Warner Chamber, the event brought together advocates, organizations, and individuals dedicated to recognizing and uplifting the essential role of family caregivers. The proclamation acknowledges the critical work done by the nearly 200,000 family caregivers in Nebraska who provide vital, unpaid support to loved ones with chronic conditions, disabilities, or aging-related needs.

This recognition would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the Nebraska Caregiver Coalition. Their ongoing work—through coordination, education, public policy, and research—has helped bring caregiver needs and voices to the forefront. The Coalition’s commitment to promoting caregiver well-being made this proclamation a reality and continues to shape the landscape of support services across the state.

Answers4Families, a proud partner of the Nebraska Caregiver Coalition, played a key role in ensuring this event was accessible to all by helping livestream the proclamation signing. Thanks to this effort, caregivers from across Nebraska were able to witness the recognition of their important role in real time.

Following the ceremony, attendees gathered on the Capitol lawn for a symbolic ribbon tying on a tree near the building’s entrance. Ribbons, tied in honor of caregivers throughout the state, served as a visible reminder of their strength, compassion, and the vital roles they play in Nebraska communities every day. The tree, now adorned with these ribbons, stands as a living tribute throughout Family Caregivers’ Month.

Organizations like AARP and AARP Nebraska also offered their congratulations and support, standing in solidarity with caregivers and championing policies that improve their lives.

As we reflect on this powerful event, let’s remember that honoring family caregivers is more than just a moment—it’s a movement. November may be Family Caregivers’ Month, but the support, recognition, and advocacy must continue year-round.

To all the caregivers: thank you for your strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication. Nebraska sees you—and stands with you.
